Road bike route description
Long distance route to the mythical PUERTO DEL SOL pass, one of the most difficult passes if starting from Malaga. Local riders compares this pass with El Alpe D’Huez, but lets go step by step to this Axarquia jewel for cyclists.
Heading east from Malaga on the N340 coastal flat route till Torre del Mar to warm up your legs. Turning north to Velez Malaga avoiding A356 means passing thru the city of Velez-Malaga. After 40km ride maybe a good option to stop for a break. Continue on windy A7205 to Trapiche, you will start to climb and roll down over smaller hills on the way to Vinuela Village. Still on A7205 you will reach Puente de Salia – a last call for a break before the difficult part of the climb. From here take A7204 to Periana - from here you will climb to Periana on an average of 6-7% to the village, take a small rast on the flat village road and after leaving Periana - the final part of climb to Puerto del Sol is on MA 156. The climb will remain in your memory for his 21 curves to the top and some steps over 15%. Its like climb the steps, but on the bike. The last 2 kilometers to the top you will be redeemed by only 8%. Reaching the top, dont forget to shoot a foto on mythical Puerto del Sol monument for cyclists.
From the height of 1078 meter above the sea level you will start to descent to Alfarnate, a small mountainous village, where you can fill your bottles with water. Reaching Venta del Alfarnate continue on A4152 till A7274 direction Colmenar. Stop in Colmenar for a break, as you have done already 100km and need to climb a bit more - Montes de Malaga climb to Puerto de Leon (altitude 940m, but starting on the level of 700hm = means not fatal this last climb). By reaching Venta El Galwey (A7000) you have 2 options to descent to your start point. On this route I have chosen to accumulate a bit more kilometers and have descended over Olias Village (the other option is continuing A7000). To Olias: first on A156 and later A3111 directly to El Palo, which is already Malaga city. Cycle leisurely to your start point ot home and order immediately massage for your legs to recover royally after this beautiful route.
