E-bike route to Puerto de León and Olías: mountain climb and coastal return
This e-bike route takes you from the heart of Malaga to the scenic heights of Puerto de León in the Montes de Málaga, with a thrilling descent to Olías and a coastal return through El Palo.
Start at bike2malaga in central Malaga and head north towards the Montes de Málaga Natural Park. As you leave the city, you'll begin the challenging climb up to Puerto de León. This ascent is a favorite among local cyclists and offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape as you gain elevation.
The climb to Puerto de León is approximately 19 km long with an average gradient of 5%. Your e-bike will be a welcome assist on this ascent, allowing you to enjoy the journey without exhausting yourself. As you climb, you'll pass through pine forests and enjoy increasingly panoramic views of Malaga and the Mediterranean coast.
Upon reaching Puerto de León, standing at around 900 meters above sea level, take a moment to rest and enjoy the magnificent vistas. There’s a viewpoint offering spectacular sights and a local venta (a traditional roadside restaurant) where you can refuel with local specialties if desired.
For the descent, you'll head towards the village of Olías. This downhill section is exhilarating, with sweeping turns and beautiful views. Exercise caution, as the road can be winding.
From Olías, make your way towards the coast, eventually reaching El Palo, a traditional fishing neighborhood in eastern Malaga. Here, you'll join the coastal road back to the city center. This section offers a relaxing ride with sea views and the opportunity to stop at one of the many chiringuitos (beach restaurants) for refreshments or a meal of fresh seafood.
As you approach the city center, you'll pass through vibrant neighborhoods before arriving back at bike2malaga, completing your loop.
The total distance for this route is approximately 50 km, with significant elevation change. While the e-bike assists with the climb, this route is best suited for riders with some experience due to the mountainous terrain and descent.
Remember to bring plenty of water, snacks, sunscreen, and appropriate clothing for changing weather conditions in the mountains. It's also advisable to ensure your e-bike is fully charged, as the long climb will use a significant amount of battery.
This route combines challenging mountain biking, breathtaking views, and a taste of local culture, providing a diverse and memorable e-biking experience in and around Malaga.
