Road bike route description
This route might be considered one of the completest for road bike cycling in Malaga area.
Start climbing the famous A-7000 to Fuente de la Reina and mythical Lions Pass (Puerto de Leon), but dont rush, take it easy. After reaching Venta de Galwey and done the first 20km with gain altitude of about 1000hm, turn right to MA-166 direction Comares/Olias on the first fast descent. On the junction take left to MA-3111 Comares. Here again steady ascend till Comares and as you are here, climb to the Village of Comares – the village has one of the highest altitudes with picturesque views over Axarquia.
Continue direction Benamargosa on MA-3105 - a fulminant descent will leads you to junction, take right to Benamargosa on MA-3107. Stop at Benamargosa in one of the village tabernas / bars for a break / coffee as you have done already more than a half and climb 2 third of the whole route. But still to go for 2 climbs and entering the area of VERTICAL VINEYARDS, which starts right after Benamargosa direction to Cutar on MA-3108. Serpentine prolonged climb to altitude of 430hm short before El Borge is marked by vineyards planted on the steep mountain slopes. The quality of the vine is excellente due to drainage and sun exposure. Axarquia is famous for Moscatel de Alexandria grapes.
We have approached the penultimate climb of the stage and now the route is descending on MA-3106 (same route, other number) to El Borge, and which number turns again to MA-3109 right after El Borge. Fast 2km descend and you are again on junction, take right to Almachar on MA-3114. Take a breath, after 1km you will climb again the steep WALL OF ALMACHAR (check our cycling route RB-27 – cycling route for road bike from Malaga)
After short descent to b, continue on MA-3119, passing the famous winery Bodega Dimobe. If you arrive before 14.30 – you can try the famous Malaga Sweet Wine (attention, not to best sugar/fructose ratio as your gel or bar, but much better taste :). Also you can fill your bottle with wine, check Moscatel or Pedro Jimenez wine). Continue descending till the N-340 – coastal road, flat section till Malaga to relax your legs.
